Throughout the County, many sites which are rich in
history and local flavor are available for exploration.
Bergen County has 18 parks dedicated to outdoor enjoyment.
Wooded hillsides and forests offer marvelous facilities for recreation
of all kinds, including swimming, hiking, fishing, and camping.
Campgaw Mountain Reservation
Campgaw Road, Mahwah

As a 1,300 acre wooded area, Campgaw features hiking trails, camping, a 28 station field
archery range and a concession-operated ski center, including eight trails, four lifts,
100% snowmaking, lessons, rentals and more.
Darlington County Park

Darlington is a 232 acre site at the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains with three seasons
of diverse opportunities offering swimming, white sand beaches, wooded picnic groves, open
lawns, tennis, fishing, basketball, handball, and wildlife observation.
Environmental Center

The James A. McFaul Environment Center in Wyckoff includes a nature trail, natural science
exhibits, a waterfowl pond, woodland garden, live animal and bird shelters, and a museum.
Educational workshops, special programs and film viewing are sponsored throughout the
year.
Ramapo Valley Reservation
Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah

A 2,900 acre area, Ramapo Valley Reservation includes part of the Ramapo River, Scarlet
Oak Pond, McMillan Reservoir, a waterfall, several scenic overlooks, approximately 15
miles of marked and informal trails, camping and catfish, panfish, perch, trout and bass
fishing.
Van Saun County Park

This 140-acre park is popular for its many attractions; both the Zoo and the miniature
railroad probably top the list. You will also find a 12-court concession operated tennis
center and a four acre pond for fishing and ice skating. Picnic groves and play grounds
provide activities for everyone.
Bergen County Zoo

The Bergen County Zoological Park, located in Van Saun County Park, Paramus, is a living
museum focusing on North and South American animals. In addition to the attractions are
interesting exhibits, an 1860's farmyard, seasonal events and year-round educational
programs.
County Golf Courses
The Bergen County Department of Parks operates four golf courses, each providing its own
unique challenge. Together, the courses total 72-holes and cover 584 acres. Added features
are the concession operated driving range, (accessible to all) pro shops and snack bars.
As part of the department's commitment to provide fair and equal access to the county golf
courses, an automated tee time reservation system is provided for public use.
Saddle Ridge Horseback Riding Area
Shadow Ridge Road, Franklin Lakes
High on Campgaw Mountain, the County's Saddle Ridge Horseback Riding Area has a panoramic
view from the paddocks and wooded bridle trails. This facility is concession-operated.
Wood Dale County Park
Prospect Avenue, Woodcliff Lake
Located in Woodcliff Lake, Wood Dale Park is centered around a pond. Activities which are
popular in the park include ice skating, fishing, and model-boat sailing. The park has
free tennis courts with lights, picnic facilities, and a children's playground .
Baylor Massacre Burial Site
Red Oak Drive, River Vale
This historical park has markers telling of the September 28, 1778 Baylor Massacre.
Visitors may see the millstone which long ago covered the burial place on this site.
Victims of the massacre were members of Col. George Baylor's Continental Army Cavalry
Regiment.
This small park near the Hackensack River in River Vale memorializes a bloody
event which took place over 200 years ago. On September 28, 1778, British forces made a
surprise attack on about 100 sleeping American soldiers. These lightly armed soldiers were
members of The Third Dragoons of Virginia. The attack was merciless. Sixty-seven
patriots were killed, injured or taken prisoner.
Pascack Brook County Park
Emerson Road, Westwood
This park offers free tennis courts with lights, a practice backstop, a children's
playground, two ball fields, and an area for soccer.
Saddle River County Park
This park consists of five recreation areas linked by a bicycle-pedestrian path and covers
a total of 596 acres. The five recreation centers include: Wild Duck Pond Area, Ridgewood;
Glen Rock Area, Glen Rock; Dunkerhook Area, Paramus; Otto Pehle Area, Saddle River; and
Rochelle Park Area, Rochelle Park. Each Area boasts a wide variety of activities including
bicycling, fishing, walking, picnicking, ice skating, and tennis.
Eastern Tower
Saddle River Road at Route 4, Paramus
The tower and paddle wheel, focal points of the famous Easton gardens, were reconstructed
by the Department of Parks in 1967. The reconstructed landmark can be seen from Saddle
River Road south of Route 4.
Overpeck County Park
Teaneck, Leonia, Palisades Park, and Ridgefield Park
This 811-acre park is divided into five areas including Overpeck Bergen County Golf
Course, Leonia North Area, Leonia South Area, Palisades Park Area, and Ridgefield Park
Area.
Dahnert's Lake County Park
Midland Avenue, Garfield
Dahnert's Lake itself is the center of activity in this park. Ice skating, model boat
sailing, and picnicking are popular activities in this park.
Samuel Nelkin County Park
Rose Street, Wallington
Tennis, sledding and picnicking draw visitors to this 23-acre county park
Riverside County Park
River Road, North Arlington
There are two areas to this park along the Passaic River: Joseph A. Carucci Jr. Area in
Lyndhurst and South Area in North Arlington. The South Area boasts a wild west playground
for children and the Joseph Carucci Area is a popular park for boccie and horseshoe
courts.
Hackensack River County Park
Route 4 at Hackensack Avenue, Hackensack
This 30-acre park behind Riverside Square Mall offers a formal promenade and viewing deck
along the Hackensack River. A series of trails allows visitors to experience diverse
ecosystems along the river.
